SHINING STARS
Each year All Saints Parish Church (Westbourne Road, Queen's Park, Bedford MK40 4LD; tel: 01234 290393) celebrates a series of Shining Stars on the Sundays of October to tie in with Black History Month.
Our Shining Stars in 2011 are:
2 October John Bunyan: Bedford's own self-educated Protestant preacher who was imprisoned and produced Pilgrim's Progress
9 October Mother Teresa: The fruit of faith is love, and the fruit of love is service
16 October Josephine Bakhita: A Sudanese slave girl who became a nun in Venice renowned for her humility and goodness
23 October Maya Angelou: An American author and poet whose memoirs deal beautifully with identity, racism, family and faith.
In 2010 we celebrated the following Shining Stars:
Manche Masemola, a South African girl who died for her Christian faith at the age of 15.
Sundar Singh, a Punjabi saint.
Rosa Parks, one of the heroes of the civil rights struggle in the United States
Local Heroes, those who have contributed to the life of All Saints' over its 100 years.
In 2009 we celebrated leaders of the civil rights struggle in the United States on the first three Sundays and an early leader in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa on the fourth Sunday.
